Texas Blue Bonnets

Texas is beautiful. When I lived in California and someone mentioned Texas I envisioned flat, boring, ridiculously hot, dry places. However now that I love here I am in awe of it’s beauty. From the Hill country to the natural rivers, to Hamilton Pool to my all time favorite Blue Bonnets. They are the most amazing picturesque display of Gods creativity. So naturally we decided that every Easter we will take family pictures in the blue bonnets. I love pictures and I love Gods beautiful creation so this was a perfect fit.

Harper Grace with the White flower and Abbey Lynn has the Pink flower.

They are almost 6 months old. (I can’t even talk about it, because I’ll start to cry)

What the twins are wearing
The girls are now wearing 6 month clothes! And some 6 months clothes are too small! Like the rompers, which are my favorite, don’t fit them because their legs are too chubby I can’t button them!! Haha I love it! So I have to buy 9 month rompers for my 5 month old twins. Who would’ve thought!

Eating
The babies still eat about every two hours during the day. If I’m feeding them to put them down for a nap or at bedtime I feed them both at the same time other wise I just feed them one at a time whenever they are hungry. At night now we are down to one feeding each!! Most nights at least. Oh yes and the babies now eat solids! I made my own baby food. I mashed up avocado and mixed it with breast milk, puréed apple and mixed it with breast milk, and did the same with carrots and sweet potatoes. The babies love it! I have started to add a little rice cereal so the babies can get some iron. But Abbey hates it.

Sleeping
We finally put the babies in their cribs!! We decided once we started in their cribs they would always sleep in their cribs, at night and naps. (Unless we aren’t home obviously) The first night was a little rough. Harper cried for almost an hour but Abbey fell right to sleep no crying, she’s a champion sleeper. But ever since the first night it has been such an amazing difference and blessing. We do our bedtime routine around 6:30 and put the babies in their cribs by 7 and they sleep about 7-8 hours wake up to eat and then sleep another 5-6 hours, and normally wake up around 8am. It’s truly wonderful. Also they are even napping better. They now nap around 10am and 2pm for about an hour, I’m hoping they start napping longer but hey I’ll take what I can get. They sometimes wake up after napping for about half an hour and fuss but typically go back to sleep after about 10 minutes. We have only been doing this for about 4 days but so far so good. And it’s also quite wonderful having our bedroom back for just us.

Favorites
The babies still love their bumbos be their sohpiethegiraffe. They now love when the other one laughs, if Abbey laughs it makes Harper smile and vice versa it’s pretty darn precious. I wouldn’t say it’s their favorite but they finally don’t cry in the stroller!! Woohoo! It might be because I stuff pretty much every you we own in with them but hey gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Accomplishments
Harper Grace has two bottom teeth. Abbey Lynn has one tiny tooth on the bottom. Both babies can pretty much sit on their own but they think it’s funny to fling themselves backwards so I never let them sit alone. Harper rolls from back to belly, but the silly goose that started rolling from belly to back at 2 months has forgotten how to roll from belly to back so she get to her belly and after a couple minutes gets frustrated that she can’t remember how to get back haha. And she pivots around her mat. Abbey get almost all the way from back to belly but can’t figure out how to get her arm through so she just chills there half rolled over, it’s pretty funny.

Challenges
The babies still don’t like their car seats. But honestly I love 5 months. The babies are so fun and the fact that they are sleeping better makes it even better. I guess the challenge this month is getting the babies to adjust to the new sleeping schedule and sleeping in their cribs.

My Favorite
My favorite this month was feeding the babies for the first time it was so fun and entertaining. I feel so blessed that God choose me to teach these little angels how to do life and even simple things like how to eat, it’s so fun watching them grow and learn.

Twins first food.

The babies have been interested in our food for a few weeks, so I did some research and we decided to try and give the babies their first food. We decided avocado. So I mixed some avocado with breast milk and we gave it to the girls. Abbey couldn’t get enough and would cry while I was giving Harper a bite. And Harper kept trying to grab the spoon out of my hand and feed herself. They both loved it and did a much better job eating then I was expecting. Pictures are worth 1000 words so here’s a bunch of pictures.

What the twins are wearing
Even though the babies have only gained a pound and a half since last month I swear they are so much chubbier. They are wearing 3 months and 3-6 month clothes.

Eating
The babies still eat about every two hours during the day. If I’m feeding them to put them down for a nap or at bedtime I feed them both at the same time other wise I just feed them one at a time whenever they are hungry. At night they eat about 3 times each.

Sleeping
A week ago we started putting the babies on a schedule. Not a strict schedule but basically what we do is a two hour schedule. Once they wake up they nurse and then we snuggle and they watch me make breakfast, we sing songs, and play and after they have been awake two hours I feed them again and put them down for a nap and Harper generally will sleep about 45mins- 1 hour and Abs will sleep anywhere between 1-2 hours. If Harper wakes up and Abbey is still asleep sometimes I will nurse Harper so she will fall back asleep so they stay on the same schedule. So we do that schedule throughout the day and then around 6:30 or 7 the babies start getting tired so we do the bedtime routine of dim lighted room, fresh diapers, clean pjs, sing a song, sound machine, nurse, then put in their rock and plays. For about 3 weeks the babies would wake up and cry when we put them down in their rock and plays so I would pick one up and feed and rock them back to sleep and then the other one would wake up so I would feed and rock her back to sleep and this would go on back and forth for about 2-3 hours. So starting a week ago we decided after they nursed and we put them down we would let them cry it out. I know many people are against this and honestly I feel you have to do what works best for you and your babies and for us that has been working wonderfully. The first night they cried for an hour and half the second night the cried for an hour the third night they cried for half an hour the fourth, fifth night they cried for 15 minutes the sixth night they cried for 5 minutes and last night they didn’t even cry at all. It has been truly what is best for all of us. Harper normally wakes up around midnight to eat and then again around 3am and 5am and 7am. Abbey usually wakes up around 2am and then 4am and 6:30am. And they babies will wake up, eat for about 10 minutes but fall right back to sleep and I put them right back in their rock and plays.

Favorites
The babies still love their activity mat. They still love looking at each other. They love holding hands. They love sitting in their bumbos. They love when we sing songs. They love their Sophie the giraffe. And they love when daddy comes home from work.

Accomplishments
The babies have learned how to grab things and put them in their mouth, especially their Sophie the giraffe, or my fingers. Harper has found her feet and loves holding and playing with them. Harper also has a tiny tooth poking through her gums. They are also doing really well practicing sitting up I have a feeling they will be sitting up on their own soon.

20140304-105333.jpg

Challenges
The challenge this month was letting the babies cry it out. It’s so hard to let your baby cry but I honestly feel it’s what’s best for them, to learn how to fall asleep and self soothe. Another challenge is that the babies still hate the car, and scream almost every time we drive somewhere. Harper also decided that she hate the stroller too. I think she doesn’t like being contained haha.

Behavior
My sweet Abbey you are so happy especially when I sing to you. You have the most adorable giggle I have ever heard in my life.

20140304-104754.jpg

My lovely Harper Grace you are so much fun and you love playing with your feet, even though your cutting a tooth you still have been so content and so joyful.

20140304-104844.jpg
You have taken a major interest in food and are always wanting what I’m eating.

20140304-105515.jpg

My Favorite
I’ve decided to add another topic and it’s where I will write my favorite thing of the past month, it could be something we did, something one of the babies did, somewhere we went, etc. So this month my favorite thing was watching the twins hold hands. They do it almost every time I put them next to each other. It makes my heart so full.

Family Hike

Taylor and I love hiking. I even did this crazy hard 7 mile hike when I was 3 months pregnant.

20140223-110506.jpg

When I found out I was having twins I thought it would be a while after having the babies before we could go hiking again. But ever since the babies were about a week old we have been going on family walks and yesterday we went for our first family hike. It was a beautiful hike to one of the most beautiful places, Hamilton Pool near Austin Texas. We had done this hike when we were visiting Austin for my husbands interview back in May, when I was three months pregnant.

20140223-111014.jpg Here’s a photo of when we did the Hamilton Pool hike when I was three months pregnant and then a picture of the same hike yesterday and the babies are three months old.

Yesterday was a beautiful 75 degrees and a perfect day for a family hike.

Make time

There’s a funny thing that happens when you become a mom.
You become a mom
I absolutely love this new addition to my identity. I love my sweet angels. I love everything about them and everything I am now because of them. They have made me more patient, more selfless, more gracious, more joyful, and so much more.

This weekend I played soccer. It was the first thing I have done for myself since the twins were born that I did before I was a mom. It was awesome. I now understand why moms say it’s important to have ‘me time.’ It reminded me that although being a good Christian wife and mother is my top priority and always will be, that I can still have a hobby and do something I love. I am incredibly blessed to have a wonderful husband who supports me and comes and watches me play and takes care of the babies and a wonderful family who also came.

I would recommend for every new mom to find something you loved doing before you became a mom and try and make time for it. It will refresh you so you can really be the best wife and mother you can possibly be.

20140217-095824.jpg
(After my game on Saturday)

Along these same lines I would also recommend to new parents to remember to still do things you did before you became parents. Taylor and I have always been total goof balls. We like to have funny face contests to see who can make a funnier face. We used to do this all the time, and last night we decided to do it again. We were making each other laugh so hard. It’s easy to forget to make time for these little things because your exhausted but honestly those 5 minutes of cracking each other up brought me so much joy and made me feel like we were silly high schoolers all over again.

20140217-100250.jpg

So let’s try this week to find a little time to do something for yourself and find time to do something silly with your husband.
